Top 10 Best Dressed Oklahoma Hunt Riders, and How to Rock Their Look!

Updated: Apr 15, 2021

We are LIVING for these riders and their hunt outfits at the Morgan Grand National & World Championship! We applaud these style icons, and share our tips on how you can shop their look!

1.

Ella Kate Payne & French Flambeau GCH

Tiny trotter, Ella Kate Payne is absolutely SLAYING it! Every single detail has been thought out down to the piping on her jacket top collar to match her helmet straps. The attention to detail of every aspect of the outfit shows deep consideration and respect for the sport. Her matching brown boots, gloves, helmet and garter straps show how seriously this team takes their craft, which paid off in a Grand National win!

Did you know that the best time to purchase a ratcatcher style shirt, is when you order your jacket? There is often left over scraps from the construction of your jacket that can pair with a shirting fabric to tie whole ensemble together. The green piping around the collar, and buttons of Ella's shirt add a pop of color that pull all colors and accents together into a blue ribbon outfit!

It is always important to remember when outfitting a young rider to make the fabric choice age appropriate and suitable for their size. Small patterns are a must, as a repeating pattern larger than 1 inch will be distracting on the build of a small rider. However, young riders can get away with colors not suitable for adult riders. A walk/trotter in a small pink herringbone would be suitable, and not in many other divisions. This rider's family did an exceptional job using a traditional hunt color, in a modern and age appropriate fabric to flatter the rider, horse and skin complexion.

Another thing to keep in mind when shopping for young riders is to always ask your custom garment maker to include as much fabric inside seams to allow for as much let out as possible! While there are certain measurements which cannot be altered after construction, there are many like bust, waist, and sleeve which are simple alterations and can be let out with growth. All of our children's garments feature this to allow for the longest lifespan with their rider as possible!

Get this look! These emerald green fabrics come in small tasteful patterns with varying levels of sheen and pattern size as to not be distracting, and suitable for rider's age and size. Contact us for guidance for your young rider! We have youthful fabrics stockpiled!

What we'd pair it with? As this young rider will likely outgrow this garment, and the jacket can be resold to a next generation rider, we recommend real suede. #2 or #7 is a perfect match to compliment this garment's top collar. Real suede has a longer life span than microsuede, and won't show wear as long as it is appropriately taken care of and dry cleaned!

2.

Alex Popper & Still The Same

Alex Popper's stunning gold colored hunt jacket pairs BEAUTIFULLY with her horse's seal bay coat and her fair complexion, making for a stunning team. Their impressive turnout and clean rides are just the cherry on top. Her simplistic pairings show class and restraint without going overboard.

The stunning fabric speaks for itself. The small pattern of the jacketing fabric is flattering and adds texture to the garment without being distracting. The simplistic black piping around the top collar aids in tying in the black from the shirt, pants, gloves, cap, and boots. Again, there is the utmost attention to detail in pairing her monogrammed shirt thread to the color of the jacket. Absolutely drool worthy!

When purchasing ratcatcher shirts, most sellers offer 2 wrap collars standard. We recommend always keeping one of the two plain from embroidery or design. This allows for slight wardrobe changes with stock pin options!

3.

Sydney LoCascio & Feel That Fire GCH

This is another wonderful example of a rider who planned out every last detail of her outfit, head to toe! Sydney LoCascio is just as pretty of a rider as her outfit compliments. The outfit should always compliment the "whole picture" of horse and rider, and never distract or detract. The stunning brocade fabric with tones of silver, brown and sage green pair perfectly with Sydney's olive skin undertones, and allow her to pick from a few different accent colors. Her fantastic two tone brown boots pair beautifully with her top collar and pocket piping, with perfectly paired brown gloves and breeches.

When going with a bolder printed fabric, we always recommend keeping other details of your outfit quiet; let the fabric and tailoring of your jacket do the speaking. In the words of Equitation Goddess herself Helen Crabtree, “Like any other part of the riding picture, tone it down when in doubt.”

Limiting accessories can be one of the hardest aspects of outfitting, even in every day street wear, but refraining from being over done or gaudy is key. Sydney did an A+ job at this, with a simple white shirt, timeless pearl earrings and small tasteful lapel pin. As our exit gate interviewer would say, Sydney is "stroking". (We've been told that's a big compliment...?)

What we'd pair it with? To compliment the brown undertones and give you pairing options for cap, boots, and gloves we love the brown pairing top collar! When using such a high quality brocade fabric, we recommend pairing it with an equally high quality real suede, like #2 or #7.

4.

Amanda DuPont & Warpath

Amanda DuPont always turns out beautiful hunters in classy traditional outfits. Many trainers choose to opt for more traditional colors and suiting fabrics, but that doesn't mean they can't have fun too! This traditional navy fabric with black undertones and a small pattern, gives slight sheen while remaining professional. Her fabric doesn't outshine the talent of her horse, but still shows attention to current trends, with tasteful polish and finesse.

Did you know that a shorter cut hunt coat, cut before draping down the rider's upper thigh, showcases a riders strong and quiet legs? This can be beneficial for equitation riders, trainers, or riders with weak upper bodies. Originally the trend was made popular by Hunter Over Fences Equitation Deity, George Morris. Others followed suit after his winning the McClay Medal in 1952. Amanda has some of the strongest and quietest legs in our industry, as you'll always see her sitting her victory passes at a full extended trot, without any daylight between her saddle, seat, and leg.

5.

Michelle Quinlisk & SPR Wing It

Michelle Quinlisk is a style icon in the Morgan Hunter world, with a different outfit for every class. Every single one is tailored to perfection, and complimenting the overall picture of each individual horse. Michelle's fair complexion and the light bay mare's coat are both complimented by the ruby red sheen of her jacket. Her simple black top collar ties together her whole outfit, with black breeches and boots so beautifully polished they shine as equally as the silk fabric. The attention to detail should be applauded.

Michelle is another perfect example of showing restraint in the accessory department. A clean and crisp white ratcatcher shirt, with traditional snaffle bit centerpiece and black piping accent the piping on her jacket. In addition to her classic small earrings, which exude class and sophistication.

Speaking of red, “pink” is often a term used to describe a red or scarlet colored hunt coat. While the origins of this terminology have become a bit of an urban legend, lost in history, many guess it was named after the first tailor to make a red hunt coat, Mr. Thomas Pinque, (which in French is pronounced, “Pink”). Legend has it that the tailor chose a deep burgundy wool fabric, so if during the fox hunt a rider got blood on their coat it would not be seen.

In fox hunting, red coats are traditionally only worn by huntsmen, masters, former masters, whippers-in, and staff members. Masters may also personally invite members of the hunt to wear the scarlet coat, as opposed to the traditional black coat, even if they are not staff, current or former ranked officials. It is a great honor to be asked to wear the scarlet shade.

We recommend if opting for a bright scarlet coat to do so with the distinction which the colors represent and a horse suitable for such a bold choice. Open and bold Amateur hunt horses would be suitable divisions to consider this garment in. Michelle and her horse SPR Wing It have definitely earned this honor, making history winning the Amateur Hunter Pleasure top ribbon in the world two years in a row.

6.

Jessica Cavanaugh & TDM Excelsiora

Jessica Cavanaugh is a strong (figuratively and literally), impressive horsewoman, to say the least. Jessica expertly navigated the mare TDM Excelsiora to a beautiful Grand National win *Lizzo's Like a Girl, plays quietly in the background*. Her garments always show her professionalism, beautiful equitation, and style, while being perfectly paired to her mount.

This dark mare's coat pairs beautifully with the deep burgundy fabric, with unique details as a bonus. The precisely matched top collar, and not often seen flat 3/4 top collar piping, makes her jacket accents pop while remaining traditional and trainer appropriate. She expertly paired her coat with a perfectly matched ratcatcher shirt, with a traditional monogram and tasteful lapel pin.

Did you know that shoulder pads don't just belong in the 80's, but actually have a hugely important role in equestrian outfitting? Like shoe size/width, everyone has differently shaped shoulders. Some may have sloping shoulders, which from the front take an 'A' formed shape. These riders, especially in the equitation ring, can take great benefit from shoulder pads to straighten out the angle. Rider's with very square and right angle shoulders should consider no padding whatsoever.

Both equitation and pleasures classes carry merits in the "whole picture" of horse and rider together. Even in the pleasure ring, benefits can be made in tailoring to perfection, which compliment each individual rider's specific shape. This is the reason people opt to go custom, instead of simply buying off rack. This is also why we always ask for photos of a client's form. It helps to assess areas of tailoring which could strengthen your fit, form and complete image!

7.

Gabriele Wright & Comiskey Park

Gabriele Wright brought home roses, rocking her stunning rose gold hunt coat! Rose gold is IN right now and this young rider knocked it out of the park! The Dupioni silk fabric with slubs (the natural horizontal texture of this silk) is flattering while showing elegance. This shade of rose gold compliments the pink undertones of the rider's complexion and is a bold pairing with black accents, gloves and breeches. Her choice of flat piping in the same suiting fabric as the jacket draws your eye to the collar and is a unique touch!

When purchasing pure silks for riding garments, it is important to keep in mind the delicate nature of the silk. At Alden Customs, we include number loops on all jackets, so you don't have to pierce your coat with a safety pin to attach your number. We highly recommend using magnets on these fabrics to attach the lower half of your number.

Silks are also prone to fading with time. After seasons of sweating, showing outside in the sun and other horse show elements they can be touched up and redyed to lengthen their lifespan and allow for resale, they can also be dyed to a completely different color. Find a professional experienced at working with silks and consider natural dying agents vs. chemical agents. They can be harsh on the fabrics leading to tears. Contact us for guidance with silk dying!

8.

Caroline Church & Lucky Strike GCH

While there are many kinds of materials, nothing looks better, wears better or tailors better than wool or wool blends. You will never be over looked in a traditional suiting fabric, with pristine fit and tailoring. Caroline Church, sporting Ellie Stevens borrowed hunt coat shows the longevity, timelessness and polished look wool provides.

Caroline's taupe hunt coat pays homage to traditional hunters and restraint in her accessories. Finesse and simplicity should be applauded! Not everyone needs a brightly colored silk or bold pattern to stand out. Lucky Strike GCH has brought home plenty of tri-color ribbons and world titles for riders following this formula, so something is working!

Paired with a beautiful crisp linen shirt with piping to compliment boots, cap and gloves, and embroidery on her collar to tie in her jacketing fabric, every aspect has been throughly planned out. Her classic pearl earrings are an impeccable choice to complete her timeless outfit, embodying that Audrey Hepburn class.

9.

Drake Braddon & JW Phantom

Drake Braddon is certainly living up to his name here, looking as regal and polished as a male swan. Although, we have it on good authority that his fan club knows him by another name, *cough cough* "Prince Charming", and we are agreeing 100%!

You don't often see male riders with garments that fit this beautifully and are tailored with this much care and consideration. The sage green color is a perfect match for his peachy skin tones and pairs beautifully with his horse's coat. His choice of details with a stunning patterned taupe check vest, sage and navy blue tie, and dark blue top collar have us cheering as much for his jaw dropping outfit as his flawless rides!

Men often opt to have their hunt coat a longer length, as not to showcase the "fun pants". We think Drake's jacket is a perfect length looking intentionally lengthened, and not ill fitting. We're impressed with the impeccable fit through his chest and biceps, showcasing his riding ability and form. We give a standing ovation for this gentleman and we hope other male riders find inspiration in this man's outfitting choices. He's straight crushing it or as rap legend who shares his namesake, Drake would say "Every time you see me I look like I hit the lotto twice".

Get this look! These lighter and green toned fabrics are a unique and updated choice for jacketing the modern male equestrian. Alden Customs makes mens wear too and not just hunt coats! Pleasure driving jackets, in hand and trainer suits, and mens western shirts. Contact us today!

What we'd pair it with? #2, #3 #4, and #7 are all beautiful real suede options, that help complete the whole outfit with different textures!

10.

Hayley Broich & GSK The Villain GCH

Hayley Broich is another beautiful example of a rider who rocks a more traditional look! Her garment is tailored to perfection, showcasing her impeccable riding ability and her accessories are paired with restraint and consideration. Simple elegance goes a long way, allowing her horse and riding to do the talking.

GSK The Villian is as good as gold with his quiet headset, attentive expression, and ground covering stride. He is beautifully paired with his partner Hayley, who is just as consistent as her mount, turning out blue ribbon performances across the central region. With her rock solid seat, quiet aides, and strong core, this Reserve World Champion adult hunt seat equitation rider is as steady as they come and doesn't need flashy fabrics to catch the judges eye. Her performances earn the respect of her judges and peers on their own.

When you chose a more traditional suiting fabric, you open up endless pairings for shirt fabrics! Follow the rule of limiting. If you chose a bold eye catching jacket fabric, the rest of your outfit should be quiet, balanced or traditional. Whereas if opting for a more subdued or muted jacket fabric, your shirt, jacket details and accessories can be bolder and less restrained! Hayley is an exceptional example of this. You don't want to appear too "busy" so this simple rule of limiting will help you greatly when outfitting and accessorizing!

Get this look! These chocolatey brown wool suitings range from no shine, to medium shine and are perfectly subtle to pair with a pop of color for shirtings or jacket accents.

Shirt Pairings? For some added wow factor, these cotton shirt fabrics are a great combination chosen for the above suiting!

What we'd pair it with? You could really have some fun with these suede options around the top collar, full pockets or under the wrist buttons for some added flare! #2, #7, #8, or #10 would all be cool options that match beautifully!

These riders and many more showcased the spirit and sophistication of the Morgan horse this last week in Oklahoma City. We couldn't be prouder! Huge shout out to The Morgan Horse Magazine as well as The Saddle Horse Report and all their incredible photographers for these photos!

Congratulation to all riders who were lucky enough trot through "The Gateway of Champions", win or lose we think you're awesome and would be honored to help outfit you next season!
